In the first half of 2023, Romanian police seized over 59 million cigarettes and 9.5 tons of tobacco, imposing more than 700 fines totaling over 6 million lei. A total of 261 operations were conducted against tobacco smuggling, resulting in 397 criminal cases and the dismantling of five organized crime groups. Significant quantities of illegal tobacco products and production equipment were confiscated, including a truck carrying 7.8 million cigarettes. A suspect was arrested and is facing trial.
