In the first eight months of 2026, Romanian immigration police identified 5,442 foreigners illegally residing in the country, primarily from Nepal, Sri Lanka, and India. The authorities conducted over 4,200 actions to enforce immigration laws, resulting in numerous return decisions and detentions. The government has approved a quota of 90,000 foreign workers for 2026 to address labor shortages, while also tightening regulations to prevent illegal employment practices. Despite these measures, challenges remain in attracting local workers due to low wages and unfavorable working conditions.
