As of June 2026, Romania ranks fifth in the EU with 215,300 individuals under temporary protection, primarily Ukrainians fleeing the war. The EU total reached 4.41 million, with a slight increase from May. Temporary protection, established in March 2022, allows refugees to stay without asylum procedures, extended until March 2028. Germany hosts the most beneficiaries, followed by Poland and the Czech Republic. Romania's rate is slightly above the EU average, with 10.1 per 1,000 residents. In June, 3,080 new protections were granted in Romania, contributing to a total of 230,765 decisions since 2022. Unaccompanied minors also received protection, with Romania accounting for 1,360 cases.
