As of September 23, 2026, Romania has reported 111 cases of West Nile virus infections, with five fatalities. Most cases are concentrated in Bucharest and Ilfov, where nearly half of the total cases have been recorded. The majority of infections are among older adults, particularly those over 70. The current outbreak coincides with a broader European trend of increased West Nile virus activity, with 1,482 cases reported across 16 countries. The virus is primarily transmitted by infected mosquitoes, and most infections are asymptomatic. There is no vaccine available for humans, making prevention measures crucial.
