Researchers from the University of Surrey warn that extreme solar storms pose a greater risk to aviation than previously thought. Their study indicates that radiation levels can significantly increase at altitudes where commercial flights operate, particularly during severe solar events. This heightened radiation can lead to errors in aircraft electronic systems, known as Single Event Upsets (SEUs), which may escalate from a few to thousands per hour during extreme conditions. The study highlights the need for a standardized system to assess and manage these risks in aviation, especially for flights over polar regions. Current safety measures are inadequate for extreme solar weather, prompting the researchers to propose a new radiation scale for aviation.
