A recent analysis by the Romanian Police revealed that most victims of online investment fraud are urban retirees aged 66 to 75, with losses exceeding 58 million lei. The study examined 1,252 cases of fraud involving stocks and cryptocurrencies from January to June 2026. It found that 78% of victims were from urban areas, with 41.9% being retirees. Individuals aged 46 to 75 made up 64.1% of the victims, and those with at most secondary education represented 50.8%. The most common fraud method involved soliciting money for investments, primarily in stocks and cryptocurrencies. Total losses included over 58 million lei, 2 million euros, and nearly 6 million dollars.
