In the first half of 2026, private pension fund assets in Romania rose significantly to 246.2 billion lei, marking a 39% increase from the previous year. The number of participants approached 10 million, with 9.64 million registered by June. The Authority for Financial Supervision reported that these assets represent 12.35% of Romania's GDP, highlighting the growing importance of private pensions. Most funds are in the mandatory Pillar II, which saw assets of 237.4 billion lei and 8.54 million participants. Pillar III, for voluntary savings, also grew, reaching 8.78 billion lei. Investments are primarily in fixed-income instruments, with 67% in government bonds and 29% in stocks, contributing to the national economy. The ASF noted that asset values may fluctuate due to market conditions but emphasized the long-term stability of private pension funds.
