As of June 2026, private pension funds in Romania managed assets totaling 246.2 billion lei, marking a 39% increase from the previous year. The number of participants reached approximately 9.64 million, with the majority in the mandatory Pillar II. This pillar held 237.4 billion lei, while voluntary Pillar III had 8.78 billion lei. Investments are primarily in fixed-income instruments (67%) and equities (29%). The president of the Financial Supervisory Authority emphasized the importance of long-term performance evaluation for these funds, which play a significant role in the Romanian economy, representing 12.35% of GDP. The system has shown resilience despite past financial shocks, contributing to both individual savings and national economic financing.
