Starting September 1, 2026, Romanians who worked in the USA can have their work periods counted for pension eligibility in Romania, under a new social security agreement. This agreement allows for the totalization of insurance periods from both countries, benefiting those who do not meet Romanian pension requirements based solely on their contributions there. However, only recognized periods under the US Social Security system will count. The agreement also outlines how pensions will be calculated and allows for similar recognition of Romanian work periods in the US. Importantly, periods worked under the Work and Travel program typically do not count towards pension eligibility. The agreement applies retroactively to previously recognized work periods, but does not create new rights for benefits prior to its effective date.
