Pope Leo XIV has ended salary cuts for cardinals and high officials in the Vatican, which were implemented by Pope Francis in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The austerity measures aimed to alleviate financial pressure on the Holy See, which faced a chronic deficit. In a papal decree, Leo XIV announced the repeal of these measures effective September 1, 2026, stating that the exceptional challenges posed by the pandemic can now be overcome. The Vatican's financial situation has improved, with a recent report showing a record net profit of 51 million euros. This decision signals a positive trend for Vatican finances and may lead to salary adjustments for employees whose wages have been frozen since 2008. Additionally, Leo XIV canceled a plan to transfer part of the Vatican Library's archives outside the city-state, opting instead for a new building within Vatican City.
