A study involving over 260,000 households in Switzerland reveals that solar panels installed by neighbors can significantly influence nearby residents' behaviors. The likelihood of neighbors installing their own solar panels, purchasing electric vehicles, and reducing electricity consumption increases with proximity. At 100 meters, the probability of installing solar panels rises by about 2%, while electric vehicle purchases increase by 2.3%, and electricity consumption decreases by 0.21%. These effects are amplified at closer distances, with a 20% increase in solar panel installation likelihood at 10 meters. Researchers suggest that social norms and direct communication about solar panel effectiveness may drive these changes.
