Romanian citizens can use their old ID cards for travel in the EU until August 3, 2031. The new electronic ID card (CEI) offers enhanced security and online functionalities. CEI is free for first-time applicants aged 14 and older, while children under 14 pay a fee. Starting August 1, 2025, CEI applications can be made at any public service office, not just the local one. CEI includes two PIN codes for security, and users must report any loss or theft immediately.
