Romanian citizens can still use the old identity card model from 1997 for travel within the EU until August 2, 2031. After this date, it will no longer be valid for international travel, although it remains valid domestically until its expiration. The new Electronic Identity Card (CEI) offers enhanced features, including online authentication and electronic signatures, while the Simple Identity Card (CIS) is available at a lower cost. Both can be requested at local public services, with CEI requiring an appointment through the HUB MAI platform.
