Romanian citizens can continue using their 1997 identity cards until their expiration date, but for travel within the EU and Schengen Area, the deadline is August 3, 2031. The old identity card remains valid as an identification document, while the new electronic identity card (CEI) offers additional features, including online authentication and travel capabilities. CEI can be issued to children from birth, with specific costs for different age groups. The application process for CEI will be more flexible starting August 1, 2025, allowing requests in any locality. Personal presence is required for both application and collection of CEI, which includes two PIN codes for security.
