Human Rights Watch has reported the continued use of white phosphorus by the Israeli military in Lebanon, emphasizing the need for new international legislation to regulate such weapons. The organization documented 23 incidents of white phosphorus use in southern Lebanon from March to May 2026. These munitions can cause severe burns and long-term physical and psychological harm. HRW calls for countries to condemn their use and initiate international discussions to address the humanitarian costs. Currently, white phosphorus is not specifically regulated under any treaty, leading to legal gaps that need to be addressed. The report stresses the importance of stronger international laws to stigmatize the use of these inhumane weapons.
