The oldest restaurant in Romania, "Butoiul de Aur," is located in Sibiu and has been operating since 1542. Legend has it that Mihai Viteazul dined there before the decisive battle of Șelimbăr in 1599. The establishment has undergone various ownership changes and renovations over the years, including a recent transformation into a brewery in 2023. Despite these changes, it retains historical significance and offers traditional dishes inspired by recipes from the past. Other notable old taverns in Romania include Cafeneaua Veche and Caru' cu Bere, established in 1781 and 1879, respectively.
