The city of Orșova in Romania was submerged over 55 years ago due to the construction of the Iron Gates hydroelectric system. Residents were relocated to New Orșova, and many were forced to demolish their homes to salvage materials. The project, initiated by Nicolae Ceaușescu and Josip Broz Tito, aimed to enhance energy independence and navigation on the Danube. The relocation process began in 1968, with the old city completely covered by water by April 1971. Thousands of graves were also moved, with some ending up in mass graves due to the lack of surviving relatives. The submerged area included historical sites and other smaller localities, with remnants of the old city occasionally visible during low water levels.
