The European Public Prosecutor's Office coordinated a major operation against a criminal organization selling over a million used phones as new across Europe, causing significant financial damage. The investigation, named "Troia," involved over 1,770 law enforcement officials conducting more than 160 searches in 19 countries, leading to the arrest of seven suspects. The fraudulent scheme resulted in an estimated loss of at least 300 million euros for EU consumers and over 30 million euros in tax evasion. The phones were refurbished in Hong Kong and the UAE, then sold in the EU under false pretenses, exploiting tax regulations meant for second-hand goods.
