Renowned Romanian soprano Ileana Cotrubaș has passed away at the age of 87, prompting the Vienna State Opera to honor her legacy by lowering its flag to half-mast. Born in Galați, she began her musical journey in 1948 and studied at the Bucharest Conservatory before perfecting her craft in Vienna. Cotrubaș graced the world's most prestigious stages, including La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera, but considered the Vienna State Opera her true artistic home. She debuted there in 1969 and performed iconic roles for over two decades, redefining artistic standards. Her contributions to Austria's cultural life were recognized with prestigious titles, and she remained active in the artistic community until 2012.
