The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has called for regulations to protect children on social media platforms following Meta's recent multi-billion dollar settlement. Meta agreed to pay up to $17 billion and restrict teen access to Instagram and Facebook in about 50 U.S. states. Turk emphasized that children should not have to wait for legal measures to ensure their online safety and urged governments to take proactive steps. He highlighted the need for safety to be integrated into platform design rather than relying solely on age restrictions. Meta is also facing scrutiny in the EU for similar issues regarding mental health impacts on youth.
