The average ocean temperature in the specified latitudes hit 21.1°C on August 22, surpassing the previous record. This unusual peak occurs during an El Niño event, typically seen in March-April. The Petermann glacier lost about 76 square kilometers of ice, marking the largest loss since 2012. Current changes are linked to the stability of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, with rapid warming posing critical risks. Romanian researchers contribute to understanding these mechanisms through studies of stalagmites, revealing past climate evolution.
