Researchers have experimentally confirmed an exotic form of ice that exists under extreme pressures and temperatures, potentially explaining unusual characteristics of Uranus and Neptune. This ice, known as hexagonal close-packed (hcp), exhibits both solid and liquid-like properties. The study involved compressing water samples between diamond tips and heating them with lasers to simulate conditions found in ice giant planets. The findings suggest that superionic ice may play a role in the magnetic fields of these planets, which differ significantly from Earth's. Further research is needed to understand the electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of this new ice form.
