O țară UE dă undă verde primului depozit geologic din lume pentru combustibil nuclear uzat
Finland has granted a license for the world's first permanent underground storage facility for spent nuclear fuel near the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant. The Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) confirmed that safety requirements are met for the facility operated by Posiva Oy. This marks a significant step in the long-term disposal of high-level radioactive waste, which has been in preparation for over 40 years. The facility will encapsulate spent fuel in canisters and store them deep underground, ensuring isolation from the environment. STUK will continue to monitor operations and requires periodic safety evaluations.
