The Dutch central bank is repositioning a significant portion of its gold reserves, transferring 86 tons from the US and Canada to London due to geopolitical uncertainties. This move enhances the bank's ability to react in emergencies, as gold in London is easier to trade. The total gold reserve of the Netherlands was 612.4 tons at the end of 2025, valued at 72.2 billion euros. After the repositioning, the share of gold in the US and Canada decreased to 18.5%, while London now holds 32.1%. The operation involved a combination of buying, selling, and actual transfers, minimizing physical transport risks. This decision highlights the strategic importance of gold reserves for central banks amid rising geopolitical tensions.
