A small town in southern Finland has developed the world's largest commercial sand battery for renewable energy storage. This facility, measuring 15 meters in diameter and 13 meters high, uses 2,000 tons of crushed soapstone to store energy as heat. It can provide 100 megawatt-hours of thermal energy, sufficient for heating approximately 5,000 residents for nearly a month in summer and a week in winter. The project, led by Polar Night Energy, significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on fossil fuels. The technology allows for energy purchase during low-price periods, making it an economically viable solution. Interest in this innovative system is growing globally, with potential for future electricity generation.
