A recent discovery by an American researcher revealed a massive crater on the Moon, named "McGetchin" after geophysicist Tom McGetchin. This crater, measuring 222 meters in diameter, is believed to have formed from an impact by a comet or asteroid in spring 2024. The finding, made using data from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera, marks the largest newly formed crater identified in the solar system. Observing its formation in near real-time could enhance our understanding of lunar geology. Unlike Earth, the Moon lacks an atmosphere, allowing space debris to impact its surface without being slowed or burned up.
