Romania may receive additional defense funding from the European SAFE program, with around €20 billion becoming available due to reduced requests from Italy and Hungary. The European Commission plans to launch a new funding invitation, allowing member states to apply for extra loans for defense projects. Romania currently has an allocation of €16.7 billion and must decide whether to request more funds. The focus of the funding will be on enhancing defense capabilities, including military equipment and air defense systems. The first tranche of €2.5 billion has already been received by Romania, with future payments contingent on project implementation.
