The Danube River is experiencing exceptionally low water levels due to prolonged drought in Central and Eastern Europe, impacting navigation and water flow. As of late August 2026, the river's flow at the Romanian border dropped to about 1,600 cubic meters per second, significantly below the historical average. Satellite images reveal exposed sandbanks along the river, particularly near Corabia. The National Institute of Hydrology forecasts further decreases in flow, with levels expected to fall to 1,500 cubic meters per second. Meanwhile, President Nicușor Dan announced plans to restart a reactor at Cernavodă, contingent on water levels.
