He highlighted the challenges posed by the Middle East conflict, indicating that many Europeans may struggle to heat their homes adequately. To alleviate market pressures, Jorgensen proposed delaying a regulation on methane emissions from hydrocarbon imports by one year. This regulation, set to take effect in 2027, requires importers to monitor and report methane emissions. French President Emmanuel Macron has also requested a delay, which faces opposition from fossil fuel-producing countries and environmental organizations, the latter arguing it would hinder climate policy progress.
