Astronomers have detected a rare black hole tearing apart a star far from its galaxy's center, identified through AI algorithms. This black hole, about a million times the mass of the Sun, is described as an 'orphan' due to its unusual position. The event, known as a tidal disruption event (TDE), occurs when a star approaches a supermassive black hole closely enough to be torn apart by gravitational forces. This TDE is the first observed so far from a galaxy's core, highlighting the potential for discovering more wandering black holes. The detection was made using the Zwicky Transient Facility and confirmed by other telescopes, revealing an intense brightness equivalent to 10 billion suns.
