Italian doctors have successfully performed the world's first transplant of the macula, restoring vision to a woman who had been blind for five years. The 67-year-old patient lost her sight due to a severe car accident that caused irreversible damage to her optic nerve. The medical team utilized healthy tissues from her non-functional left eye to reconstruct her right eye, including the central part of the retina. This groundbreaking procedure lasted nearly six hours and has shown promising initial results, although further evaluation is needed to assess its effectiveness.
