Researchers have identified a substance that can inhibit the aggressive form of the dangerous fungus Candida albicans, which poses a significant health threat. The antibiotic gladiolin, produced by a bacterium, has shown promise in laboratory tests by reverting the fungus to a less invasive state. This discovery is crucial as fungal infections are increasingly resistant to treatment, causing around two million deaths annually. Gladiolin works by stimulating proteins that enhance glucose consumption in the fungus, effectively limiting its resources. When combined with the antifungal drug amphotericin B, the duo proved more effective against biofilms formed by Candida albicans. Further research is needed to determine the safety and efficacy of this approach for human treatment.
