Waiting times have reached 19 days, the highest since 2022, prompting some operators to pay extra to expedite their passage. The situation is exacerbated by geopolitical tensions and climate issues, particularly the El Niño phenomenon, which has led to stricter cargo limits. Notably, Neopanamax vessels are most affected, while Panamax ships experience less disruption. Some ships have resorted to transferring cargo at sea to maintain supply to Asian clients, while others are taking longer routes around South America, adding costs and time to their journeys.
