In the first half of 2023, Germany saw a record 12,812 companies file for insolvency, the highest since 2013. Local courts recorded 2,266 insolvency requests in June, marking a 15.8% annual increase, indicating that Chancellor Friedrich Merz's efforts to stabilize the economy have yet to yield results. Consumer insolvencies also rose by 5.1%, totaling 6,839. The total claims registered in local courts from January to June 2026 amounted to approximately €18.5 billion, down from €28.2 billion in the same period of 2025. The transport, hospitality, and construction sectors were the most affected. Analysts predict a further increase in insolvencies throughout 2026 due to ongoing economic challenges.
