In the first half of this year, EU countries recorded about 332,000 asylum applications, marking a 17% decrease compared to 2025, the lowest in five years. This decline is attributed mainly to the political transition in Syria, which has reduced the number of Syrian asylum seekers. The EUAA also noted that the ongoing Middle East conflict has not led to an increase in asylum requests. Most applications came from four countries: France, Italy, Spain, and Germany, with Afghan nationals being the largest group of applicants. Less than a third of processed applications were accepted, and new regulations have introduced accelerated procedures for applicants from countries with low recognition rates.
