Romania will implement the electronic toll system TollRO on August 31, 2026, changing how road taxes are calculated for freight vehicles over 3.5 tons. Unlike the current vignette system, the new method will charge based on distance traveled, vehicle category, and emission levels. This system targets only freight transport operators, while cars and lighter vehicles will continue using the vignette. The toll rates will vary depending on the vehicle's Euro standard and the type of road used. Payment options include route tickets, a mobile app, or an onboard device for frequent users. Non-payment will result in fines, with checks conducted electronically.
