In 2025, global water bodies faced unprecedented drought levels, as reported by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The decline in water reserves raises concerns about future supply. The WMO's report indicates a decade-long decrease in water contributions to groundwater, lakes, and snow. The Secretary-General of WMO warned that humanity is depleting its water reserves, with significant drops noted since 2014-2016. Over a third of the world's river basins are experiencing below-normal flows, marking 2025 as one of the driest years in 35 years of data collection. Some regions, particularly in South Asia, reported excess water, highlighting irregular hydrological cycles. Glacial regions worldwide also faced losses due to melting glaciers, increasing long-term hydrological risks.
