President Nicușor Dan has challenged the law declaring Voluntari a municipality at the Constitutional Court, citing outdated referendum results and insufficient criteria fulfillment. He argues that the 2004 referendum does not reflect current demographics and that a subsequent 2009 referendum favored transforming Voluntari into a sector of Bucharest. Additionally, he points out that Voluntari fails to meet the legal requirements for municipality status, including inadequate healthcare and educational facilities. The law was sent for promulgation on October 3, 2026.
