Romania consistently ranks among the highest in the EU for electricity spot prices, currently averaging 208 euros/MWh. This situation is influenced by a chronic lack of cross-border interconnection, limiting the flow of cheaper energy from Western Europe. During peak demand, reliance on domestic resources increases, especially when renewable production drops due to extreme weather. The market mechanism, particularly the marginal pricing principle, exacerbates costs as the last power plant activated determines the final price. Additionally, inadequate storage capacity and the closure of the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant further strain the system. Solutions include rapid energy storage development and enhanced interconnection capacities.
