Authorities in Guyana have launched a criminal investigation following the capsizing of the MV Barima ferry, which tested positive for cannabis among crew members. The ferry, built in 1939, was on a route between Georgetown and Port Kaituma when it overturned. Passengers reported water entering the cargo hold before the incident, complicating rescue efforts due to nighttime conditions. The captain and crew are in police custody, with officials emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for drug use. Investigations also focus on potential overloading, as estimates suggest more passengers were aboard than officially recorded. Currently, 69 people have been rescued, 27 confirmed dead, and 83 remain missing, with search operations ongoing.
