NATO has thwarted a secret Russian underwater operation near Svalbard, where Russian submarines simulated using a new weapon to disable submarine communication cables. This operation was conducted by Russia's Main Directorate for Underwater Research (GUGI), which is under US and UK sanctions. The exercise occurred near two critical fiber optic cables connecting to mainland Norway, which are vital for data transmission. Norway and the UK discovered this clandestine operation in April 2026 and warned Russia against using the new technology.
