As temperatures rise, new plant species are appearing on European mountain peaks, but cold-adapted plants are increasingly disappearing. A study spanning over two decades analyzed vegetation changes on 62 mountain summits, revealing that while some species are moving to higher altitudes, the proportion of species lost locally has increased. For every 0.1°C rise in temperature, local losses rose by 1-1.6%. Vulnerable populations at lower altitudes face diminishing space to retreat as conditions worsen. The study highlights a potential delayed effect of climate change, where species may persist for years despite unfavorable conditions, indicating a need for further investigation into these dynamics.
