The rapid expansion of data centers in the U.S. will require $110 billion in investments to generate 45 gigawatts of electricity by 2030, according to Moody's Ratings. Most of this capacity will come from natural gas plants, consuming an additional 113 million cubic meters of gas. Solar power and energy storage will contribute the rest, while nuclear reactors will add less than 5%. Data centers are projected to consume 426 terawatt-hours by 2030, doubling their share of total electricity consumption to 10%. The construction of new power plants may increase electricity costs by $25 to $30 billion annually. Regulatory delays could hinder the timely development of these projects, as demand for data centers outpaces the electric grid's capacity to expand.
