Misterul unui sarcofag roman descoperit la Westminster Abbey a fost, în sfârșit, elucidat

Archaeologists have identified the skeleton found in a Roman sarcophagus at Westminster Abbey as likely belonging to a medieval abbot. The discovery, made in the 19th century, was clarified through radiocarbon dating and inscriptions. The sarcophagus, dating from the late Roman period, was excavated in 1869 and contained a skeleton that matched 19th-century drawings. Recent investigations revealed that the remains likely belonged to Ælfwig, an abbot who died around 1020. The findings suggest the sarcophagus was reused and relocated during construction work by Henry III.
