The Sumela Monastery, a significant religious site on the Black Sea coast, has a history dating back to the 4th century. Founded by two monks who had visions of the Virgin Mary, it features a church and various monastic buildings adapted to the rocky landscape. The monastery flourished during the 13th century under the Trebizond Empire and was later preserved by Ottoman sultans. Its frescoes depict biblical scenes but have suffered damage over time. Monastic life ceased in the early 20th century due to population exchanges between Greece and Turkey, leading to abandonment. After restoration efforts, it reopened to visitors and hosts religious services on the Feast of the Assumption.
