Recent analysis of ancient remains in Egypt suggests that early kings may have had their attendants sacrificed to accompany them in the afterlife. This theory, proposed by Flinders Petrie in the 1920s, is supported by modern forensic methods revealing lethal injuries on some remains. The study indicates that many of these injuries occurred around the time of death, reinforcing the idea of ritual sacrifices known as 'retainer sacrifice'. However, not all buried individuals may have been killed; some could have died from other causes. This practice may date back to the early Egyptian state, predating the construction of the pyramids.
