EU finance ministers will discuss a potential tax on the exceptional profits of energy companies benefiting from rising oil and gas prices. The proposal was initiated by finance ministers from several member states due to consumer dissatisfaction with rising living costs. German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil emphasized the need for the European Commission to present taxation models for excessive profits. However, the European Commissioner for Economy, Valdis Dombrovskis, stated that the Commission does not plan to propose a EU-wide taxation mechanism, leaving it to member states to decide on their fiscal policies. Oil futures have surged above $100 per barrel amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
