Microsoft has reported a significant rise in the use of invisible characters in spam campaigns to bypass email filters. These special Unicode characters are inserted into common words, making them undetectable to recipients while complicating automated systems' ability to recognize them. Since February 9, 2026, the number of detected messages using this technique surged from about 21,000 to over 2.3 million daily. Most messages were related to financial offers, and while this method has proven effective, over 99% of such messages were still blocked by other security measures. Microsoft suggests normalizing text to counteract this tactic.
