The mayor of Iași, Mihai Chirica, has been charged with abuse of office related to a payment of over two million lei for non-existent fuel. Prosecutors allege that 542 tons of fuel were falsely documented as received, leading to complicity charges against nine other officials. Measures have been taken to secure assets belonging to Chirica and others to recover the financial loss. The investigation focuses on a payment made to the National Administration of State Reserves, which is claimed to be based on a fictitious purchase. The total estimated damage is 2,036,882 lei, paid from the local budget.
