The real cost of a metro trip in Bucharest is nearly 14 lei, while state compensation lowers it to about 5 lei. The effective price for travelers can be as low as 2.3 lei with subscriptions. Union leader Marian Artimon stated that a proposed fare increase to 7 lei was not approved due to insufficient votes. He emphasized that the fare hike was necessary for Metrorex's cash flow, as the state failed to provide adequate subsidies. The interim Transport Minister canceled the fare increase planned for January 2026, which was initially agreed upon to cover the company's financial needs.
